The Story of Black Iron Horse

The name “Black Iron Horse” originates from Vesterbro in the 18th century, where our first workshop was also located. It was here that the inn “Sorte Hest” (Black Horse) was built in 1771, giving the area its name.

It was also here that blacksmith Lars Leikier developed the original Sorte Jernhest cargo bike. After two years of development, the innovative rear-wheel-steered cargo bike was launched. The design is unique, as it not only allows the bike to turn on a dime but also enhances usability since the bike’s maneuverability is not compromised by the load – quite the opposite.

In 2019, we reinvented the rear-wheel-steered bike – and haven’t looked back since.

Our cargo bikes have proven their worth for over 25 years. Every cargo bike is still finished with the greatest care and love for craftsmanship at our workshops in Nørrebro and Kastrup.
